Mathieu Flamini: biochemicals and the transition away from fossil fuel-based value chains
Former Arsenal footballer Mathieu Flamini, CEO and co-founder of GF Biochemicals
key takeaways.
The transition from fossil fuel-based ingredients to bio-based alternatives is accelerating due to consumer demand and energy security concerns
Advances in scaling biochemicals are expanding their use across industries, including consumer products, agriculture and industrial applications.
From shampoo to paint to agricultural products, biochemicals are helping to reformulate many products made from fossil fuel-based inputs.
On the sidelines of LOIM’s Transition Investment Summit, Mathieu Flamini, CEO and Co-Founder of GF Biochemicals1 and former footballer with Arsenal and AC Milan, shared his perspective on the commercial tailwinds supporting the bioeconomy. As energy security concerns, price volatility and growing demand for safer, more sustainable products gather momentum, the transition away from fossil fuel-based feedstocks for chemicals used in personal and home care, agriculture and industry is accelerating. Drawing on GF Biochemicals’ experience in developing and scaling bio-based alternatives, he explored how innovation can help transform the fossil fuel-based value chain for the sector.
Can the bioeconomy create the industrial value chains of the future?
Can biochemicals disrupt the fossil fuel-based value chain?
My name is Mathieu Flamini. I've been a professional football player for nearly 20 years, playing for the club of Arsenal, AC Milan and others. And today, the CEO and Co-Founder of a biochemical company called GF Biochemicals1.
The commercial tailwinds for sustainability today, I think, are pretty simple. First of all, we are facing a geopolitical crisis. And we see the price of oil has never been this high. So predictability and stability is key for any chemical company or any FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods) company.
The second aspect is we are facing new demand. We're addressing new problems – PFAS, forever chemicals. People want safer everyday products. From the shampoo you use in the morning to the shower gel, to the cleaning product you use in your house, or to the paints you are using, like to decorate your house. All those products are formulated with ingredients which are fossil-based.
What we're trying to achieve with the bio-economy is to transition from a fossil-based industry toward a safer and more sustainable one. Over the past 10 years, we have developed more or less 200 patents. We are now scaling up the volumes, scaling up the product at commercial scale. Our product can be used in shampoo, they can be used in sunscreen, they can be used in in fragrances. They can be used in paints and the agri market.
If you intend to invest in the industries of the future, if you intend to invest in the economy of the future, it has to go through sustainability.
