Morningstar Ratings are entirely performance based, bringing load-adjustments, performance (returns) and risk together into one evaluation. To determine a fund's star rating for a given time period (three, five, or 10 years), the fund's risk-adjusted return is plotted on a bell curve: funds scoring in the top 10% of the relevant category receive the maximum 5- star rating, the next 22.5% receive a 4- star rating, the next 35% a 3-star rating, the next 22.5% a 2-star rating, and the bottom 10% a 1-star rating. The Overall Morningstar Rating is a weighted average of the available three-, five-, and 10-year ratings, where applicable.
The Citywire fund manager ratings are based on the rolling 3-year risk adjusted performance of each fund manager vs their benchmark(s). Any manager that is outperforming their benchmark(s) over a rolling 36 month time period is awarded a rating from Citywire. On average, only around the top 25% of the 15,000 managers that Citywire track are outperforming their benchmark each month and therefore only these managers receive a rating from Citywire. Citywire then break these ratings down into the 4 levels of rating; the top 10% (of the outperforming managers), receive AAA, the next 20% AA, the next 30% A and the final 40% +. A manager will only lose their rating if they underperform their benchmark(s) over this 3 year period.
