Lombard Odier Investment Managers appointed by Brunel Pension Partnership

All Roads multi-asset range selected for its strong risk management.

Lombard Odier Investment Managers (“LOIM”) has been appointed by the Brunel Pension Partnership, one of the eight Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) pools in the UK, as one of the managers for its Diversifying Returns Fund.

The Brunel Pension Partnership Limited manages around £30 billion of assets on behalf of 10 likeminded funds: Avon, Buckinghamshire, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Environment Agency, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Somerset, and Wiltshire.

LOIM’s All Roads multi-asset strategy was launched in 2012 with the aim of providing investors with steady performance across market cycles by giving investors access to multiple sources of potential returns and diversification in a single portfolio and via an explicit focus on drawdown management. Today the team manages over £5 billion of assets, including assets from Lombard Odier’s Pension Scheme.

The mandate has been awarded following a competitive tender process.

Ritesh Bamania, Head UK and Ireland Institutional Clients and Solutions at LOIM, said: “The Brunel Pension Partnership is recognised for its rigorous risk management and sustainability focus. We are pleased they identified the same rigour in LOIM and have chosen our All Roads range as part of their Diversifying Returns Fund.

“The importance of seeking strong returns and low drawdowns is greater than ever for long term investors such as pension schemes, especially in periods of high volatility. While pension funds might have a longer investment horizon, their focus on maintaining strong funding ratios has increased and so has the need to maintain liquid funds to pay for increasing pension outgo and/or meet calls for illiquid assets. As a result of this, we’ve seen consistent and increased interest in our multi-asset range over the past years given our innovative approach to diversification and drawdown management. We are delighted with the confidence shown by Brunel in our strategy and years of experience in multi-asset investing and look forward to a mutually beneficial relationship.”

Emily Booth, Senior Investment Officer at Brunel Pension Partnership, said: “Brunel were seeking a strategy whose risk budget is set systematically yet is highly responsive to changing market conditions. We were impressed by the pragmatic approach of Aurèle and the team, making adaptations to improve the ESG profile within the constraints of liquidity and constantly researching and enhancing the process.”

Aurèle Storno, CIO for Multi-Asset at LOIM, said: “Our most recent experience shows again that markets can move in ways we cannot forecast and our role as investors is to confront them. This is only possible if you’re sufficiently nimble. We have always focused on maintaining high liquidity in our portfolios and structured our multi-asset range in a way that allows us to be flexible and efficient, with the objective to offer stable returns to our investors.”
