Pioneered 70 years ago in Japan, a technique called ‘natural farming’ allows crops to thrive in a natural environment. It involves no fields of straight lines, no tilling, and crucially, no pesticides or fertilisers. This style of ‘less is more’ agriculture has recently broken into the mainstream: India is aiming to roll it out to 6 million farmers.

A United Nations study on natural farming is finding that it has positive effects on food security as well as climate change resilience.

Natural farming allows nature, not the farmer, to dominate how crops are grown. Natural capital includes all the resources of our planet: soil, water, minerals, forests, and is fast becoming eradicated due to the take-make-waste way in which we live our lives.

In the video below, we consider how investors are waking up to the concept that our economy depends on natural capital. It’s not possible to completely revert our world to its natural state, but there are ideas we can take from natural farming by reflecting on our destruction of the natural world. There are innovations and new business models that are emerging from the circular bioeconomy, where we are using cutting edge technology to unlock ancient secrets perfected by nature over 2 billion years of evolution.

Crucially, because of nature’s unique CO2 sequestration capabilities, it has substantial unrealised value as we transition to net-zero carbon emissions.

We believe a strategy that focuses on harnessing the power of nature via the circular bioeconomy and preserves nature through a leaner form of industry can generate high returns and help identify companies able to deliver strong growth.
