Ice cubes, burning logs and the road to net zero: Episode 3

Ice cubes, burning logs and the road to net zero: Episode 3

We believe that some of the best net-zero opportunities exist among companies whose current emissions would exclude them from low-carbon strategies but, due to their action on achieving carbon-reduction targets, indicate that they are on viable decarbonisation pathways.

We define these transition opportunities as ‘ice cubes’ because their progress on reducing emissions from today’s high levels to meet the target set by the Paris Agreement is helping to cool the economy and drive the transition forward.

In the third episode of our new podcast series on ice cubes, burning logs and the road to net zero, Head of Sustainability Research Thomas Höhne talks to one such ice cube. Deutsche Post DHL Group’s Head of Investor Relations Martin Ziegenbalg explains how the company1 is approaching the transition to net zero and plans for the future in the context of the climate transition.

Head of Sustainability Research Thomas Höhne: “At Lombard Odier, we have developed implied temperature rise metrics. These metrics look not only at a company's carbon footprint today, but how these are expected to evolve. They also tell us if they're falling quickly enough to be aligned with the goals of the Paris Agreement. And Deutsche Post DHL Group, according to our assessments, is one of the few companies that indeed seems to be moving towards alignment with the Paris Agreement.”

Deutsche Post DHL Group Head of Investor Relations Martin Ziegenbalg: “We know that the transportation sector, globally, is responsible for more than 16% of global greenhouse gas emissions. So we have set ambitious targets to reduce emissions.

“We have developed what we call the ESG Roadmap 2.0 .We are shifting the whole exercise to the next level by incorporating it firmly into our overall group strategy and articulating very clear and concrete targets.”
