CLIC™ conversations: the food and land revolution

Land applications, including agriculture and forestry, account for around 20% of GHG emissions. Our overall food and land use systems must be reformed in order to bring down emissions.

In the fifth episode of our six-part series on the climate transition, we ask what needs to change with regards to how we approach land use and with how we source our food. A series of transformations are required to ensure a fundamental redistribution in the use of land, favouring the restoration of natural forests, and to minimise the amount of food that goes to waste.

Senior Sustainability Analyst Thomas Höhne-Sparborth outlines the need for a combination of solutions and technologies in order to restore essential ecosystems and increase the regenerative capacity of agricultural activities, as well as measures aimed at improving efficiency, yields, reducing food waste, and changing diets.

“Many different changes will be required, some of them technological, some of them regulatory, and some of them behavioural”, says Höhne-Sparborth.

To find out more about the challenges and opportunities presented by the food and land use revolution, listen to the full episode below.

Top three takeaways for investors

  • When we talk about food and land use, we are talking about an interconnected system. As we change one part to that system, it will have an impact on others.
  • Changes to land use will require a combination of regulatory action, investment action, technological innovation, but also behavioural change. We will all need to think more about what we put on our plate and what we consume in our day-to-day lives.
  • Change on this scale comes with an upfront cost but the associated opportunities are significant. It is estimated that between USD 300-350bn a year is required to transform our food and land systems. However, this has the potential to unlock a combined business opportunity of around USD 4.5tn.
