How forests can help make fashion sustainable

Worth USD 3 trillion globally, fashion is big business. But its allure is tarnished by environmental damage: the industry generates 5% of the world’s carbon emissions, 20% of its wastewater and contributes to microplastic pollution of our oceans.

But change is taking root, as innovative companies are leveraging the regenerative power of nature to source sustainable textiles from forests. We explore this in our latest FT Rethink video, which is shown below.

Forestries to shop floors: creating sustainable textiles

Austria-based company Lenzing is among the innovators.1  Sourcing wood from certified forestries, it produces cellulose that is dissolved and air-blown to create cotton-like fibres used in biodegradable textiles.

Spinnova, based in Finland is another producer of sustainable wood-based textile fibres – which are made in a completely chemical-free process.

With the world currently producing about 100 million tonnes of textile fibres, the need – and opportunity – for forests to transform fashion is clear.

It shows how businesses can preserve and harness nature to deliver solutions helping to overcome sustainability challenges.

The imperative of sustainability-focused innovation is clear to Marc Palahi, Director of the European Forest Institute, who is featured in the FT Rethink video. "The secret in the coming decades is to recognise [that] the true purpose and the true engine of our economy is nature," he says.
