The Zero-Hour Sessions
Sustainability is a core investment conviction at LOIM, which is why we are pleased to be attending international climate conference COP26 in order to present our views on the transition to a net-zero economy.
Our headline sessions at the COP26 summit focus on sustainability investment research, strategy & stewardship. ‘Assessing portfolio alignment to net zero’ aims to help investors understand not only the scale of emission exposure in a portfolio today but, crucially, the expected evolution of those emissions. ‘Developing climate-aligned investment solutions’ outlines the composition and objectives of a comprehensive climate investment proposition. ‘Predictors of success in a greening world’ draws on our new report, in partnership with The University of Oxford, to identify the emerging global trends in green competitiveness, examine some winners and losers in detail, and identify how governments might take advantage of these green prosperity opportunities. ‘Investing in Nature at Scale’ examines the role of Nature-based solutions (NBS) in supporting large-scale carbon removal, avoiding emissions linked to land use change, and safeguarding biodiversity. ‘Assessing portfolio alignment to net zero’ analyses the new approaches that are needed to assess portfolios and their climate positioning. This session is dedicated to exploring the rationale, use cases and common misconceptions around such emerging approaches, and how they may be integrated into portfolios.

Assessing portfolio alignment to net zero
The transition to net zero involves a comprehensive transformation of our economy and affects every sector and industry. For investors, alignment to the transition requires more forward-looking capabilities. Investors must understand not only the scale of emission exposure in a portfolio today but, crucially, the expected evolution of those emissions. New metrics, such as Implied Temperature Rise (ITR) are emerging as powerful new means of screening portfolios. Best practices for the design and implementation of these and other metrics are now coming to the fore and will drive a rethink of how we might approach climate risks in portfolios.

Developing climate-aligned investment solutions
A comprehensive climate investment proposition might be thought of as comprising three distinct pillars. Firstly, the mitigation of exposure to climate risks, primarily through improved alignment to rapid decarbonisation. Secondly, the pursuit of climate-related opportunities, recognizing that many emerging disruptive business are well-positioned for a net zero and nature-positive economy. And thirdly, the funding of green investments, including nature-based solutions, where a significant ramp-up in investment will be required. We explore how these different objectives may be implemented in practice across different asset classes, and the challenges encountered along the way.

Predictors of success in a greening world
The transition to a green economy is shifting the global competitive landscape as more countries, regions, and corporates commit to net-zero targets. We present revealing insights from our exclusive report “Predictors of Success in a Greening World” in partnership with The University of Oxford with detailed country case studies.
Our event hosts a keynote from the report principal investigator Professor Cameron Hepburn followed by a moderated panel where our esteemed guests discuss the implications of the race to net zero, the investment opportunities and the upside of the climate transition.

Investing in Nature at Scale
Investments into nature will play a critical role in our transition to net zero and supporting the invisible engine of our economy. But in order for us to meet the steep decarbonisation objectives of the Paris Agreement, safeguard biodiversity, and sustain our economies, these investment will need to be scaled exponentially. Informed by science and the latest market developments, our “Investing in Nature at Scale” event explores the unique investment opportunity in preserving and harnessing nature through nature-based solutions, the carbon markets and leveraging the unique power of natural capital.

Deploying capital in the age of planetary boundaries
The move towards a net-zero and nature-positive economy requires the large-scale transformation of our economy. Our “Greening portfolios and deploying capital for transition” multi-session event outlines a vision to ensure capital is deployed in a way that not only tackles climate change but makes sure we safely operate within our planetary boundaries. We discuss alignment frameworks, transition pathways and roadmaps and introduce the concepts of net-zero capital deployment using forward-looking metrics including Implied Temperature Rise metrics (ITR) and Climate Value Impact (CVI).
